A sump pump sits in a pit at the low point of the basement. Water from drain tile, or from the soil under the slab, collects in the pit until a float switch starts the pump, which pushes it up and outside through a discharge pipe. If the pump quits during a thaw or a power outage, the pit overflows. That's why the pump, the switch, the backup and the discharge route all deserve attention.
Is my pump on its way out?
- It runs constantly, even in a dry stretch
- It hums but no water moves
- The float hangs up on the pit wall or the pit is full of grit
- It rattles, screeches or trips the breaker
- Nobody knows how old it is
What are the choices?
- Primary pump. Submersible pumps sit in the water and run quieter; pedestal pumps sit above it and are easy to service. Sizing should match how much water your pit actually gets in March, not in August.
- Battery backup. A second pump on its own battery takes over when the main pump fails or an ice storm knocks out power.
- Sealed lid and liner. A tight cover keeps debris out and cuts the moisture and odor a pit adds to the basement air.
- High-water alarm. It sounds when water rises faster than the pump can remove it, so you find out before the floor does.
Where should the water end up?
On ground that slopes away from your house and doesn't flood a neighbor's yard or freeze into a sheet of ice across a sidewalk. A line that empties beside the foundation just sends the same water back to the pit. In winter, an outdoor discharge line can freeze solid, so ask how the company keeps it draining, for example by sloping it so it empties fully or adding an overflow opening near the house. And don't tie the pump into a floor drain or sewer connection without checking local rules first. Oneida County's sewer system already struggles with wet-weather overflows, which our Oneida County basement water guide explains.
What drives the price?
- Reusing the existing pit or digging a new one
- Pump type, plus any battery backup or alarm
- Length of the discharge line and whether it runs underground
- Electrical work for a dedicated outlet
Pricing comes only from the waterproofing company, after someone has been down in the basement, looked at the walls, floor joint and sump, and walked the outside of the house to see where roof and yard water goes. We don't quote prices, and nobody can price a basement accurately over the phone.

Common questions
Do I need a battery backup sump pump in Utica?
If you store anything valuable in the basement, or your power goes out in winter storms, a backup is worth considering. It sits idle until the main pump can't keep up or loses power.
Why does my sump pump run all spring?
Snowmelt and a high water table can keep a pit filling for weeks. Constant running can also mean a stuck float, a missing check valve or an undersized pump, so have it checked before it burns out.
