The Town of Whitestown was formed in 1788, before Oneida County existed, and is often called the "Mother of Towns" because so many others were carved from it. Hugh White's family settled at the mouth of Sauquoit Creek in 1784. The town had about 18,100 residents in 2020 and includes the villages of Whitesboro, Yorkville, Oriskany and most of New York Mills, with the Mohawk River along its northern edge.
Low ground, high water
Much of the village area sits on the broad, flat valley floor where Sauquoit Creek meets the Mohawk. The USGS maps recent river alluvium over sand and gravel here, with dense glacial lake silt and clay deeper down, and notes a relatively shallow depth to water in most places. In practice that means water often rises from below, through the floor and the joint at the base of the wall, as much as it pushes through the walls. A dependable sump pump with a backup, fed by perimeter drain tile, usually matters more on the flats than wall coatings do.
Wet weather and the sewer system
These villages are part of the county sewer basin served by the Sauquoit Creek pump station, which has overflowed in wet weather. Keeping sump water in the yard instead of the sewer line helps your neighbors as well as the system.

Will waterproofing protect my basement if the river floods?
No. Waterproofing deals with groundwater and seepage. Surface floodwater is a separate problem, and flood insurance and elevation questions belong with your insurer and your village or town.
