The Town of New Hartford had just under 22,000 residents in 2020, making it Utica's largest suburb. Jedediah Sanger settled here in 1788, mills grew up along Sauquoit Creek, and the town was set off from Whitestown in 1827. Today it takes in New Hartford village, part of New York Mills, and hamlets like Washington Mills and Chadwicks to the south along Route 8.
Newer foundations, different leaks
Much of the town's housing went up after the mill era, so poured concrete and block foundations, attached garages and finished basements are common. That shifts the typical problems: shrinkage cracks in poured walls that seep each spring, block walls whose hollow cores fill and weep at the bottom course, and finished rooms where a slow leak stays hidden behind drywall until the carpet squishes.
Slopes and the creek valley
Subdivisions climbing the hillsides on either side of the Sauquoit valley sit downhill from wooded and open ground, and houses cut into those slopes often take water on the high side. A footing drain that has clogged with silt, or never existed, is a frequent culprit there. Lots in the town tend to have more yard room than city lots, so exterior excavation on the leaking wall is more often an option.
What jobs come up most here?

Common questions
Is New Hartford covered by the Utica permit office?
No. New Hartford has its own town and village governments, so check with the local building office before excavation or structural work begins.
My finished basement smells musty but looks dry. What should I do?
Measure the humidity with a meter and, if you can, look behind the baseboard on outside walls. A waterproofing company can test for moisture hidden behind finished surfaces.
